TMJ Symptoms

The most common symptom of TMJ is an aching pain in and around the ear that may travel to the side of the scalp or back of the head. Worsened by chewing and excessive talking, a person may also experience difficulty opening the mouth.

Other TMJ symptoms include:

  1. Ability to eat only soft foods
  2. A clicking sound when opening your mouth or chewing
  3. Headaches
  4. A disproportioned bite often described as “uncomfortable” or “off”
  5. Pain in the neck, back and shoulder
  6. Ringing in the ears
  7. Dizziness
  8. Vision problems
  9. Earache
  10. Jaws that get stuck or lock

Although your jaw may not be moving, you may still feel pain in that area. Most often, however, that pain heightens when you move your jaw to chew, talk or yawn.

Many people believe they have TMJ pain at the experience of occasional pain in the jaw—a common problem. However, if the problem or other symptoms constantly occur, visit your dentist for possible TMJ screening and testing.
